Starting with varieties that are known regional successes and moving on to complete planting and growing information, this book is the one that Midwesterners will turn to in order to plan and enhance their gardens. One of the first volumes in Sunset’s new series, it includes a Calendar of Top 10 Tasks for each season and a whole chapter devoted to lawns and their alternatives, including native prairie plants. 5 out of 5 stars Gardening 101   May 28, 2007

As a new and inexperienced gardener, I found this book to be very helpful when planning my small garden. The language is very clear and easy to understand, especially for people who are unfamiliar with basic garden terminology. In addition to planting tips, there are sections devoted to all the different types of plants, flowers, and shrubs. Each spread contains basic information about various plants, including information on when and where to plant them, specific planting instructions and a "TLC" section for each plant. There are also beautiful color photos of hundreds of different plants and suggestions on which plants make great garden companions. I'm very glad that I have this book to help me along during my adventures in gardening!

This book is a great collection of Midwest annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs. There are a lot of great color photos in this book and MANY helpful hints on each plant individually.

5 out of 5 stars Great for new Gardeners   May 3, 2009
R. L. Martinson (new glarus, WI)
I purchased this book before I bought my house and immediately started planning out how I wanted my future yard to look. It's a great starter for those of us who dont know much about our "zones" in the midwest. It's good to know that the plants that are being recommended are cold hardy and will live through our harsh winters. If you are just getting started with landscaping, this is a great book to buy! This book is in no way overwhelming with "gardener's lingo" that will confuse you, it is pretty basic. Many of the plants are available at Home Depot or Menards. Try is today!
