| Customer Reviews: A highly recommended guide for tailoring a garden August 8, 2002 Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
The New York/Mid-Atlantic Gardener's Book Of Lists by Bonnie Lee Appleton (Professor of Horticulture, Virginia Tech) and gardening journalist and writer Lois Trigg Chaplin contains more than two hundred lists to help regional gardeners select the very best plants for their particular interests. Ranging from plants that attract butterflies, to shrubs that offer fall color to hardy annuals for early spring bloom, The New York/Mid-Atlantic Gardener's Book Of Lists is also laced throughout with practical and insightful tips for gardeners. The New York/Mid-Atlantic Gardener's Book of Lists is a first-rate, "user friendly", highly recommended guide for tailoring a garden to suit the needs and interests of gardeners in New York and the other mid-Atlantic states.
Excellent guidebook March 26, 2004 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Our gardening consultants use this book constantly to help homeowners decide which plants work best in different areas of the landscape. There is one or two minor outdated listings, such as recommending leyland cypresses which have been overplanted in this region and recently have been found to suffer from an incurable canker disease that can kill whole rows of trees. However, customers can use this terrific guidebook and then call their extension office or trusted nursery to confirm their selections before making big purchases. A little homework before planting will reward them with healthier, longer lived plants and minimal need for the use of toxic chemicals. With more people making major plant purchases based on price at big box stores, instead of wisely going to nurseries where the employees are more knowledgeable, it is important to have a book like this available to the average homeowner. Also, this book is geared specifically to the mid-atlantic region's unusual weather challenges. Excellent book, well written and well organized, a great gift for most gardeners.
Book of Lists Review January 17, 2007 Thomas J. Price (Sperryville, VA USA) This is a book that no serious gardener in the Mid-Atlantic Region should be without. It is well organized and easy to use and really answers the question on what plant one should place in a specific location.
