5 out of 5 stars AHHHH FINALLY   August 6, 2009
Mr. Allnut (United States)

After 27 years in Florida coming from the Midwest, a book that tells you WHAT, "WHEN" and even how to plant.

The book is organized by types of gardens plants. For example, vegetables and herbs are one a section, citrus is a section, etc. Then each section is organized by month. As I write this review it is August. I turned to the month of August under vegetables and herbs. I found out I should be getting my tomatoes in NOW. I would of waited without this book and been late, as usual.

Finding a Florida book that will tell you when plants, especially vegetables, have to be in for season is impossible. This book does it simply, easily and fairly completely.

Let's face it, this is Florida, you can pretty much get away with sticking a tree or a bush in the ground anytime of the year, but if your tomatoes are too late, or too early, they are burned to a crisp, lettuce bolts and cucumbers shrivel. Planting okra in October? Forget it. You will learn what crops are best for what seasons.

All I can say is FINALLY!! THANK YOU MR. MacCubbin....

We've lived in Fl for ten years and what/when to plant has been a mystery to me. Mr. MacCubbin's book has answered every question I have come up with so far. Thank you Tom!

5 out of 5 stars Gardening by the Book   April 30, 2009
J. Clinger (Ohio)
I live in Ohio and was thrilled to find a gardening book specific to my part of the country. Later I sent the Pennsylvania version to a family member in Pennsylvania, and TWO to family and friends in Florida. All have expressed delight in a book " just for them" and their locale.

Since each book follows the same format, it is very easy to go to the month of the year and specific area you wish to read about ( lawn, perennials, etc.)I recommend this book to beginning and seasoned gardners.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect Florida gardening book   January 25, 2010
Dennis Beall (Pine Ridge, Florida)
I checked this book out of the library so often that I decided I should have my own copy. It is the best guide to gardening in Florida that I have ever used in the 10 years we have lived in Central Florida.

This book has an easy to use month by month format that makes it easy to look up what to do for each type of plant in what month.

This is not a book to just sit down and read front to back. It is a very user-friendly reference book, making it easy for you to see when to plant broccoli, or when to prune crape myrtles, etc.

I spent, wasted actually , a lot of time and money trying to garden the same way I had in Maryland before I learned to work with Florida's special requirements for a variety of plants. My pansies are doing wonderfully as winter bedding plants, while we enjoyed tomatoes out of our backyard garden right up until Christmas.

If I only had one reference book about gardening in Florida, this would be it.

5 out of 5 stars Moving from grocery store to garden? A straightforward guide to growing your own food.   April 14, 2010
Eric W. Rittenhouse (Clearwater, FL)
My wife and I decided we would join our local community garden to grow our own food, or at least supplement trips to the grocery store. We wanted to quickly learn what to plant and when. This book was very helpful. She read the entire thing cover to cover. I focused on the sections of what I should plant my month.

When we started our garden project, I thought we were too late. The book gave very clear instruction based on our location (West/Central Florida) and month (as it promises). We've had excellent results.

One item not covered in the book - If your intention is to grow food to reduce the cost of your monthly/weekly food bill, I'm skeptical of maintaining a garden to save money. Compiling the cost in time, renting a tiller and buying tools and fertilizer I'm pretty sure these vegetables will be the most expensive we eat this year.

From a more positive outlook, now that we own equipment, the costs should go down slightly next year and we've met very nice people. I will probably enjoy growing those relationships as much as the food. I also enjoy the quality time I have spent wife her and the kids, so overall, I'm happy to be a (micro) farmer!
