reference it every day! July 8, 2008 A. Lilikoi 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
i checked this book out from the library, and let my neighbor borrow it. she liked it so much didn't want to give it back. as soon as i started reading it, i understood why. it's very approachable, and has lots of crucial information for first-year and experienced gardeners alike. and it's got nice pictures and clear diagrams. i really like the "top crops and how to grow them" section.
so i bought my own copy, and i've been showing it to everyone who stops by to see my veggies. i like her "messy-looking" technique of interplanting all different kinds of vegetables. altho i should have paid more attention to how far apart to plant seeds, i had a veritable tomato forest under my squashes.
i bought another copy for my stepmom, and she loved it. she's a top notch gardener. she wrote to say this book had answered some of her longtime questions, and she had only owned it for a few hours. she said the book was "awesome" and she uses it frequently.
i have half a dozen gardening books, but this is the one i re-read most often.
garder's bible meets intimate memoir January 25, 2007 Lynn Christianson (Decorah, IA USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I was stunned into awe at how thorough and informative and easy to use this book is. Great reading. It's a bible for beginner's to advanced. She gives tips on how to develop your garden from start to finish (so you're not too overwhelmed). She covers all areas surrounding organic gardening - compost, crop rotation, bugs we like and bugs we don't, how to make the most out of your soil and space, preparing beds, building raised beds, watering, and, of course, companion planting.
With lots of helpful diagrams, photos and tables she makes sure her information has been gotten across. There is absolutely nothing I don't like about this book. I also bought a great herb book I love, but couldn't use it as I'd like without the aid of this book. Huzzah!
Beyond Companion Plants February 6, 2007 Charles F. Tutt (Columbia, Missouri, USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book goes beyond companion plants to include synchronicity and balance in every aspect of the very best natural gardening practices. Well written and well illustrated, it is one of the top 3 in my extensive gardening library.

I don't have this book any more! May 18, 2006 Amanda Peck (Waynesboro) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
So why is it getting 5 stars from me?
It came in, I scanned it, learned that the author mixes her plants in a glorious mess for several reasons--she likes it that way, it cuts down on insect pests, it cuts down on weeds.
Hmmm, that's sounding like a friend of mine's garden. The friend who despairs of ever growing eggplant because of flea beetles--and she loves eggplant. People keep telling her to grow eggplant widely spaced, with nothing between the plants. She'll try it if it gets her eggplants.
Then I saw the picture of the baby eggplant in the first picture section--surrounded by cosmos.
And took the book to her. She nearly squealed when she saw the picture.
I may have to get another copy.
Great book for the organic home gardener! June 6, 2007 S. Sanchez (San Diego, CA United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I read this book from cover to cover. The author's style of writing is conversational and very easy to read. I bought a couple of other organic gardening books but I liked this one the best. Her love of nature and plants really comes across. I understand now how the balance in nature takes care of pests with some planning from us. She shares a lot of really good, easy-to-do tips on how to garden organically. I've implemented many of her ideas in my own garden and can see them working already. Most of all, this book has made me aware of how important the insects and bugs in my garden really are. I recommend this book to anyone who really wants to garden organically.
